Elfriede Elb

(née Lõhmus)

1923 -2019

Elfriede passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Scarborough Centenary Hospital in Toronto, with family at her side. Her health in the last few months had been challenged, but her love of friends and family remained strong.

Elfriede was predeceased by her sons Jaan and Jüri, as well as her husband Hugo. She is survived by her daughter Ann (Michael Caden) and her son Aldo (Megan Digby-Elb), as well as her beloved grandchildren Christian, Deanna, Taylor and Daniel.

Born October 5, 1923 in Kihelkonna, Saaremaa, Estonia to Sofia and Vladimir Lõhmus, the eldest of nine children. Elfriede is predeceased by seven of her siblings, Leonid Lõhmus, Eugen Lõhmus, Anton Lõhmus, Serafima Koivuhalme, Luule Naar, Heli Bauer and Ants Lõhmus. She is lovingly remembered by her youngest sibling, Maire (Oswald Riisma) of Boca Raton, Florida.

Elfriede (known as Riide) leaves behind many nieces and nephews with their families in Canada, the USA and Sweden. She also has extended family and many friends in Estonia that she always kept in her thoughts. Riide kept an ongoing relationship with several of them, despite not having lived in Estonia for many, many years.

Elfriede worked for many years until retirement at the Bank of Nova Scotia. A great joy in her life was spending time at the cottage in Collingwood, where she shared enjoyable time with a close community, that she considered her second family. Riide continued to spend her time with lifelong friends at Ehatare, a place and time she held very dear.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at Ehatare Retirement Home, 40 Old Kingston Road, Scarborough on Thursday, October 10th, 2019 at 2pm.

A special thank you is extended to the caring staff of the Scarborough Centenary Hospital and the wonderful staff of Ehatare Retirement Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Estonian Foundation of Canada (Eesti Sihtkapital Kanadas), or Eesti Abistamiskomitee Kanadas (Ehatare) or a charity of your own choosing would be appreciated. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
