Obituary of Gail Elizabeth Wellner





Gail passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on March 12, 2022, in her 82nd year. Dearly beloved wife of Gordon William Wellner. Loving mother to Thomas (Mary) and Andrew (Janice). She will be sadly missed by her sisters, Judith (Michael) Smith, Sandra (Gordon) Mackay, and Kathryn Siggins. Proud and caring grandmother to Nicholas, Anna, Riley and Benjamin, along with many treasured nieces and nephews and extended family. She leaves behind many friends in PEI, Halifax, Toronto, Florida, and staff at the Claremont Retirement Residence in Toronto, Ontario who gave great care, support and compassion over the past four years since she was in residence. In addition, the staff and team at Sunnybrook in Toronto provided excellent care and compassion during her final weeks of life.


Gail was born in Fortune, Prince Edward Island. She attended the University of Toronto, Trinity Campus and graduated with a degree in Philosophy. After graduating, she taught at the University of Prince Edward Island and then became a full-time mother to her two young boys. Gail obtained her CGA, while at the same time working and bringing up a family with her husband Gordon.

Gail was active in both business and the community. She started her own company called "The Centre for Entrepreneurial Development" where she taught many individuals to learn how to start up their own small businesses. She was involved and volunteered with Junior Achievement for Prince Edward Island. Gail was Past President of the Toastmasters International for Charlottetown where she learned and refined the skill of public speaking and also helped coach others.  She was on the Executive Board for the Prince Edward Island Horse Council and Joyriders. Gail had a passion for horses and was instrumental in the development of the Strathgartney Equestrian Park in PEI. Gail was ahead of her time as an environmentalist with her focus on sustainable land use and forestry through her wood lots.



A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bay Fortune United Church in Fortune, Prince Edward Island in the summer of 2022.


In Gail’s memory, donations may be made to Joy Riders, Therapeutic Riding Association of Prince Edward Island Inc. where she volunteered her time. The Joy Riders mission is "the enhancement of the physical, emotional, and social well-being of children and adults with disabilities through various forms of therapeutic riding."  Condolences may be forwarded through
