Obituary of Shane Stephen Ward

Shane was born on August 19, 1954 in South Kirby, Yorkshire, England, and died on September 17, 2022 (too early), at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital, Toronto, after courageously battling an aggressive and painful cancer.

Son of Sheila and the late Alec Ward.  Dear husband and true love for 44 years to Karen. Always proud Dad to Gareth, Nigel (Marlee Vanderkooy), and Emma, who all adored him. Survived by loving siblings Dean Ward and Carole Ward (Scott Clayworth). He will be missed by in-laws Cathy and Ted Connor, Wendy Horbay and John Minor, Susan Horbay and Dave Somers, Nancy Baye, and by dearest family friends Barb Ward and Vicki Dodd.  Nieces and nephews are all saddened by this deep loss. Hattie, the last in a long line of devoted dogs is missing her Daddy.

Shane immigrated to Canada when he was 12 years old. He enjoyed a career in Human Resources, a compensation and benefits specialist working first in the banking sector, then several major retail organizations, and most recently at the Art Gallery of Ontario. He loved working closely with people and hearing their stories.

He was an active, engaged man, passionate about long distance running, golf, cycling, soccer (a lifelong supporter of Leeds United), the blues and rock music, trains, impressionist art (especially involving trains), dogs, and good wines.

Sincere thanks to the caring teams at the Princess Margaret Hospital, and particularly to the empathetic and compassionate nursing and support teams at the Bridgepoint Palliative Care unit, especially to Dr. Jeff Myers for his remarkable kindness. Thank you for allowing Hattie to visit and bring Shane smiles every day.
